Job DescriptionRoles & ResponsibilitiesPosition SummaryThe Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient management of medical equipment and biomedical systems within the hospital. The role covers equipment selection, installation, commissioning, preventive and corrective maintenance, performance verification, user support, safety compliance, documentation, and coordination with clinical departments and external service providers.Key Duties and Responsibilities1. Medical Equipment ManagementManage the complete lifecycle of medical equipment, from assessment and procurement through installation, operation, maintenance, and eventual replacement.Maintain an updated inventory and asset register of all biomedical equipment.Assess equipment requirements in consultation with clinical and administrative departments.Provide technical input for the selection, evaluation, and purchase of new medical equipment.Review technical specifications, quotations, and vendor proposals and provide recommendations to management.Coordinate equipment installation, commissioning, acceptance testing, and handover.2. Preventive and Corrective MaintenanceDevelop, implement, and monitor preventive maintenance schedules for biomedical equipment.Perform or coordinate corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and functional testing.Ensure equipment is maintained according to manufacturer recommendations and applicable hospital policies and standards.Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns, particularly for critical-care and life-support equipment.Verify the safety and performance of equipment before returning it to clinical use.Coordinate warranty repairs, annual maintenance contracts, and service agreements with authorized vendors.3. Biomedical Equipment SafetyEnsure medical equipment is safe for patients, clinicians, technicians, and other hospital personnel.Conduct electrical safety, performance, and functional checks as applicable.Identify and mitigate risks associated with medical equipment and its use.Recommend removal from service of defective, unsafe, obsolete, or unreliable equipment.Support investigations of equipment-related incidents and implement appropriate corrective and preventive actions.4. Clinical and User SupportProvide technical support to doctors, nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals.Assist clinical users in the appropriate operation and basic troubleshooting of biomedical equipment.Conduct equipment orientation and user training following installation or whenever required.Work closely with clinical departments to understand operational requirements and resolve equipment-related issues.5. Documentation and ComplianceMaintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, calibration, breakdowns, repairs, inspections, warranties, and service contracts.Ensure biomedical equipment documentation is complete, current, and readily accessible for audits.Support compliance with applicable healthcare regulations, accreditation requirements, medical-device requirements, and hospital policies.Prepare periodic reports on equipment availability, downtime, maintenance activities, costs, and major technical issues.6. Vendor and Contractor CoordinationLiaise with manufacturers, suppliers, authorized service agents, and contractors regarding technical and maintenance matters.Monitor vendor performance against agreed service levels and contractual requirements.Verify service reports and maintenance activities before approval or closure.Assist procurement and finance teams in evaluating technical aspects of vendor quotations and service contracts.7. Equipment Planning and ImprovementAnalyze equipment performance, downtime, repair frequency, and maintenance costs to support replacement and capital-planning decisions.Recommend upgrades, standardization, or replacement of equipment where appropriate.Support the implementation of new technologies and biomedical systems.Contribute to initiatives aimed at improving equipment availability, patient safety, operational efficiency, and cost effectiveness.8. Hospital Engineering CoordinationCoordinate with Facilities, IT, Infection Prevention and Control, Nursing, Clinical Engineering, Procurement, and other relevant departments when required.Ensure equipment installations are compatible with electrical, networking, medical-gas, environmental, and other infrastructure requirements.Participate in hospital emergency preparedness activities involving critical biomedical equipment.
