Job Function

The Research Assistant (Technician) supports laboratory-based scientific activities for the research project “Prevalence of NDM Gene in Multi-Drug-Resistant Patients in A’Sharqiyah North” (Project ID: BFP/URG/HSS/25/155). The role involves performing molecular biology procedures including bacterial DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and gel electrophoresis under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.

Responsibilities

1. Perform bacterial DNA extraction from clinical isolates using standardized extraction kits.2. Carry out PCR amplification for blaNDM gene detection using validated primers and PCR master mix.3. Prepare and run gel electrophoresis for visualization and analysis of PCR products.4. Maintain accurate laboratory records, including sample logs, reagent usage, and experimental results.5. Assist with phenotypic testing including antimicrobial susceptibility testing (disk diffusion) and carbapenemase detection (Modified Hodge Test, combined disk test with EDTA).6. Follow laboratory biosafety protocols and good laboratory practice (GLP) standards at all times.7. Report progress and findings regularly to the Principal Investigator.

Experience

Demonstrated hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques, particularly DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis. Prior exposure to clinical microbiology laboratory settings is an advantage. Experience with antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods is desirable.

Skills

• Proficiency in molecular biology laboratory techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis).• Knowledge of biosafety protocols and good laboratory practice (GLP).• Familiarity with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) concepts and carbapenem-resistant organisms.• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate scientific records.• Good communication skills in English; ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary research team.

Qualification

Bachelor degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, or a closely related field.
