Medical Underwriting Manager Job Purpose The Medical Underwriting manager is responsible for managing Group and Retail Health underwriting across SME to large corporate accounts. The role holder will be responsible for technical risk evaluation, pricing, portfolio growth and retention, regulatory compliance, reinsurance coordination, and development of Omani talent within the department. Key Responsibilities Medical Underwriting & Portfolio Management • Underwrite new and renewal Group Medical business across SME to large corporate accounts (varying member sizes and premium volumes). • Carry out technical evaluation of Group Medical tenders and RFQs from Sales team and brokers - coverage, premium, and claims analysis. • Analyze medical records, claims history, and risk factors to accurately assess insurance eligibility and pricing. • Release competitive quotes and terms through prudent rating of insured lives, in line with reinsurance treaty guidelines. • Underwrite and manage Retail/Individual Health lines, developing suitable products for individual members. • Monitor and drive portfolio growth, persistency, and retention through improved service and pricing strategy. Reinsurance & Pricing • Coordinate with reinsurers to ensure underwriting terms align with treaty arrangements. • Conduct loss ratio analysis (network-wise, location-wise, channel-wise, broker-wise, TPA-wise) to guide pricing and business strategy. • Support forecasting, budgeting, and business planning for the medical portfolio. Client & Broker Relations • Submit and negotiate underwriting terms with clients and brokers. • Network with brokers and clients to resolve queries and clarify policy benefits. • Develop tools/modules for brokers and intermediaries (e.g., quotation management, SME premium calculators) to improve turnaround and service efficiency. Compliance • Coordinate with Operations, TPAs, Claims, and Finance teams for smooth service delivery and issue resolution. • Prepare and present the medical underwriting report for submission to Financial Services Authority ensuring compliance with UHIP guidelines, Dhamani, and other applicable regulations. • Monitor emerging health trends and regulatory changes to keep underwriting criteria current and competitive. Omanization & Talent Development • Identify, coach, and mentor Omani employees within the underwriting team to build a sustainable local talent pipeline. • Design and implement a structured on-the-job training plan covering medical underwriting techniques, pricing, and regulatory requirements. • Set clear development milestones for Omani staff to progressively take on greater underwriting responsibility. • Support succession planning by preparing capable Omani nationals for future underwriting roles. Key Requirements Education & Qualifications • Bachelor's degree (relevant field); MBA preferred. • Professional insurance qualification required (FIII, Diploma in Health Insurance, or equivalent). Experience • Minimum 10–12 years of experience in medical/health underwriting, including Group and Retail lines. • Proven track record managing large corporate medical portfolios and driving portfolio growth/retention. • Experience in technical evaluation of tenders/RFQs, reinsurance-treaty-aligned rating, and loss ratio analysis. • Experience liaising with regulators on health insurance compliance matters (UHIP/Dhamani or equivalent local framework). • Prior experience managing broker and TPA relationships. Skills • Strong technical underwriting and risk assessment capability specific to medical insurance. • Analytical skills that include loss ratio analysis, pricing, forecasting, and budgeting. • Strong stakeholder management (brokers, TPAs, clients, regulator). • Team leadership and coaching skills, with commitment to national talent development. • Process/technology orientation with experience developing tools or systems to improve underwriting efficiency.
